A routine Friday night at Charlotte Douglas International Airport turned unsettling after a strange smell from an American Airlines aircraft sent seven workers to the hospital with symptoms from inhaling an unidentified substance. According to the Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency (MEDIC), the incident happened around 9 p.m. on June 27, just before passengers were set to board Flight 2055 bound for Los Angeles. The aircraft never made it to takeoff. Instead, it was pulled from service and its crew rushed for medical attention.
The Scene: A Jet, a Smell, and Sudden Symptoms
The odor was first noticed by crew and ground personnel as the Airbus A321 idled at the gate. While passengers were not yet on board, six crew members and one gate agent reportedly experienced symptoms severe enough to require hospital care. MEDIC later confirmed the injuries were minor, and all individuals were in stable condition after treatment.
According to PEOPLE, American Airlines stated that the odor was reported "prior to customers boarding" and that "crew members received medical attention on site and were transported to a nearby hospital where they were evaluated and released."
The plane, Flight 2055, never left the tarmac. It was officially canceled and sent for inspection by maintenance teams, according to airline representatives.
What Was That Smell?
Authorities haven't yet identified the exact source of the odor, though initial reports mentioned a possible scent resembling jet fuel. According to WCCB, MEDIC said there were "no other readings for anything else" on the aircraft, adding a layer of mystery to an already bizarre situation.
One person reportedly experienced more serious symptoms than the others, though no additional details were made public.

The odor incident came on a night already riddled with disruption. American Airlines, which operates the most flights out of Charlotte, was grappling with a system-wide technology issue that had already delayed or canceled hundreds of flights. By 10:35 p.m., more than 731 flights had been delayed and 132 had been canceled at the airport.
Adding to the chaos, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had issued a ground stop for all flights from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. due to severe storms. American Airlines confirmed the stop was requested because of the weather, which worsened the airline's tech-related delays.
