Baker Accused of Stabbing 7 Coworkers After Birthday Party

On an otherwise quiet April morning in Antipolo City, the Philippines, a bakery turned into the scene of a horrific tragedy. The kind of place where the smell of freshly baked bread might drift into the street now holds the weight of unimaginable violence. Seven young men — many of them related, some still teenagers — lost their lives in their sleep. The man accused of killing them? Their colleague and alleged business partner, Bogart Ramirez, just one day after his birthday celebration.

A Shocking Discovery

In the early morning of April 22, police were called to the J&B Malunggay Bakery in Barangay Cupang after a neighbor heard cries for help. Inside the modest building, officers found seven lifeless bodies. According to an official statement from the Rizal Police Provincial Office, the victims appeared to have been attacked while asleep, and all had been residing on the premises.

The suspect, 32-year-old Ramirez, was arrested less than two hours later. He had already turned himself in at the Philippine National Police headquarters. According to multiple reports, Ramirez claimed he surrendered because he believed there was no escape.

The Alleged Motive

While in custody, Ramirez allegedly told authorities that he had overheard the men plotting to smother him to death in his sleep, supposedly to take over the bakery business before his wife arrived in town. He believed the group, mostly made up of relatives of his business partner, intended to make his death look like a bad dream — literally.

"There are two of us who are partners at the bakery, and all of the other workers are his relatives. They were trying to gang up on me," Ramirez allegedly told investigators, according to the Mirror. "If I die, the entire business will be his, so I decided to act first."

Under the Influence?

The night before the killings, Ramirez had been given a bottle of gin as a birthday gift. According to police, that same alcohol was shared during the celebration. Investigators are now testing the liquor to determine if it was laced with sedatives. Ramirez allegedly waited until his coworkers were impaired before stabbing them one by one.

Two of the victims were minors; the others were between 21 and 25 years old.

Ongoing Investigation

While Ramirez remains in custody, police have publicly stated they are not convinced he acted alone. Colonel Felipe Maraggun of the Rizal police said authorities are considering the possibility of an accomplice and are continuing to gather evidence.

The full motive — and whether others were involved — remains under investigation. For now, a birthday party has become a national mystery, and seven families are left grieving in its wake.
