Creepy Man Organizes Woman's Shoes During Break-In
In a bizarre and unsettling incident, a man broke into an Iowa woman's apartment, organized her shoes, and stole a pair of socks while she slept on the couch. The entire episode was captured on a security camera, revealing the chilling movements of the intruder.
The Night of the Intrusion
On the night of April 1, 2023, 23-year-old Dan Abimana entered a woman's apartment in Ankeny, Iowa. The security footage shows him wandering through the apartment, hovering over the sleeping woman, and meticulously arranging her shoes. He also helped himself to a drink and used the bathroom, all while the woman remained asleep.
The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, had fallen asleep with the TV on and the door unlocked. She only woke up when Abimana accidentally bumped his knee against her. In a state of confusion and fear, she questioned the stranger. According to Law and Crime, he responded, "I'm the guy who dropped you off last night," a statement that immediately alerted her to the fact that he was not someone she knew.
The Aftermath
Once the woman realized the danger she was in, she started screaming for her son. Abimana then quickly left the apartment, grabbing a pair of her socks and putting them on as he walked out. The woman immediately called the police, who arrived to take fingerprints and search for the suspect.
Abimana was later identified and charged with trespassing. Ankeny Police Sgt. Corey Schneden explained that no burglary charges were filed because there was no clear intent to commit a crime beyond trespassing. Schneden noted in his report that alcohol was involved, suggesting that Abimana may have been confused and ended up in the wrong apartment. The woman, however, expressed her dissatisfaction with the charges, feeling as though Abimama should have been charged with burglary or assault.
Lasting Trauma
The incident has left a lasting impact on the woman. She now has trouble sleeping and is constantly checking her surroundings for any signs of an intruder. Since the break-in, the woman has taken additional security measures to protect herself, though she declined to specify what those measures are. She emphasized the importance of securing one's home, especially in large apartment complexes where it can be easy to get confused about which unit is which.
While Abimana faces charges of trespassing, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that come with unlocked doors and the importance of home security. The woman's experience highlights the long-term emotional impact such invasions can have, leaving a lasting sense of fear and insecurity. As she continues to recover, her story stands as a cautionary tale for others to take their personal safety seriously.
