The Disney Dream was en route back to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after a four-night Bahamian cruise that included a stop at Disney’s private island, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. On the evening of June 29, the trip took a harrowing detour.
According to multiple reports, a little girl fell from the fourth deck of the ship. Her father, without hesitation, jumped after her. "Her dad went in after her," passenger Kevin Furuta wrote in the Disney Dream Cruise Ship Facebook Group, according to PEOPLE, adding that a man-overboard alert blared shortly after the incident.
Passenger Mary Ann Sutherland shared that the girl had been sitting on the railing before the fall. "A little girl fell overboard and her father jumped in to save her ... apparently the dad sat her on the railing," she posted, according to the Economic Times.

"The ship was moving quickly, so quickly, it's crazy how quickly the people became tiny dots in the sea," said passenger Laura Amador, who spoke to CBS News Miami. "The captain slowed the ship and turned it around."
The father reportedly held his daughter above the water and treaded water for more than 10 minutes — some reports say nearly 20 minutes — until the ship's lifeboat crew reached them.

Passengers were visibly moved by the drama unfolding before them.
"Oh my God, that's a dad that needs to have a hero. He's a hero," said passenger Tracy Robinson-Hughes, according to CBS News Miami. "He jumped in to save his child."
"I saw the mother crying," Robinson-Hughes added in her conversation with the outlet. "But when they rescued them, I think that's when the tears really started flowing because you were just so overjoyed."
No injuries were reported, and Disney Cruise Line later issued a statement praising the crew’s quick response, according to PEOPLE: "We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes."
How Did It Happen?
Details remain unclear about how the child was able to fall from the fourth deck, as the ship is equipped with plexiglass safety barriers. Some passengers speculated she may have been sitting or climbing on the railing when the fall occurred. Disney Cruise Line has not released further specifics, citing an ongoing review of the incident.
