Did She Really Poison Her Husband?

In September 2000, 41-year-old Jose Francisco "Frank" Rodriguez was found dead in his Montebello, California home. His wife, Angelina Rodriguez, claimed he had been experiencing symptoms like food poisoning. But as investigators would soon discover, the truth behind Frank's death was far more sinister.
A Fatal Marriage
Angelina and Frank met at Angel Gate Academy, a boot camp for troubled teens, and married in April 2000. However, just five months later, Frank was dead. Initially, authorities found no signs of foul play. But at Frank's funeral, a peculiar remark from Angelina raised suspicions. She suggested that oleander, a highly toxic plant, could have been used to poison her husband.
Despite this odd comment, the investigation stalled until tests revealed traces of oleander in Frank's body. Yet, the amount wasn't enough to be fatal, leaving investigators puzzled about the cause of death. Then, in early 2001, a shocking discovery was made: Frank had a lethal dose of antifreeze in his system. His death was officially ruled a homicide.
Twisted Plot for Profit
Investigators dug deeper into Angelina's life and discovered that just three months into their marriage, she had taken out a $250,000 life insurance policy on Frank. It soon became clear that Angelina's motives were financial. In fact, in the days following Frank's death, she was eager to collect the insurance payout. Without a confirmed cause of death, however, she could not receive the money.
As authorities continued to investigate, more chilling details emerged. Angelina had reportedly joked with a friend about being bored with marriage and mentioned different ways to kill her husband, including the use of oleander and antifreeze. Detectives also noticed that branches from the neighbor's oleander bush extended into her yard. They determined that when oleander didn't work, Angelina switched to spiking Frank's drinks with antifreeze.
The Final Blow
In January 2001, after her arrest, Angelina Rodriguez wasn't ready to give up. While awaiting trial in jail, she hatched a plan to eliminate a key witness, her close friend Palmira Gorham, who could testify against her. Angelina sought help from another inmate to carry out the murder-for-hire plot, offering money in exchange for Gorham's life. Authorities quickly caught wind of her plan and devised a sting operation.
They staged a fake murder scene with Gorham posing as if she had been shot in the head. An undercover officer, posing as the hired hitman, brought a photo of the staged murder to Angelina in jail. Instead of reacting with shock or remorse, Angelina was reportedly thrilled, believing this would secure her freedom. This botched murder plot ultimately sealed her fate, solidifying her guilt in the eyes of investigators and ensuring a harsher sentence. In 2004, Angelina Rodriguez was sentenced to death for the calculated and cold-blooded murder of her husband. She appealed, and in 2014 the California Supreme Court upheld her death sentence. She remains on death row.
What began as a seemingly tragic death from natural causes was, in fact, a carefully orchestrated murder for financial gain. Through relentless detective work, Angelina Rodriguez's plans unraveled, proving that justice, though delayed, was inevitable.
