Raegan Anderson and Chandler Kuhbander once looked like a forever story. High school sweethearts who both chose firefighting careers, they spent seven years together before their relationship unraveled. But no one could have predicted the horrifying final chapter that unfolded miles from home.
High School Sweethearts, a Shared Calling, and a Shocking End
On June 30, 2024, authorities found Anderson, 24, and Kuhbander, 24, dead inside her car, hidden in the woods of Cosby, Tennessee. Investigators concluded Anderson fatally shot Kuhbander before taking her own life. According to Newsweek, she left behind a heartbreaking note: "I'm sorry to whoever found us. I am sorry to everyone I hurt. ... I love you Nanna. I want her to inherit everything."
From Gym Parking Lot to a Cross-State Hunt
The nightmare started six days earlier on June 24, 2024. Security footage showed Kuhbander leaving his gym in Savannah, Georgia, and walking calmly toward Anderson's car. That marked the last time anyone saw him alive. Investigators later determined Anderson forced him into the car.
The next day, witnesses spotted the pair at Liberty County Fire Services Station No. 1. Anderson's debit card transaction at a Circle K in South Carolina and a ping from Kuhbander's cellphone added chilling breadcrumbs to the timeline. Days later, police found their bodies slumped in the vehicle more than 300 miles away from where their journey began.
An autopsy revealed Kuhbander had two gunshot wounds to the upper back, near his neck, while Anderson died from a single shot to the head. Toxicology tests found no drugs or alcohol in her system.
Red Flags Before the Disappearance
Trouble had already been brewing. Just two days before the disappearance, police arrested Anderson for vandalizing Kuhbander's car after she found him on a date at Olive Garden. According to PEOPLE, Anderson told officers she was "very hurt by him moving on," as recorded in the police statement.
Even after posting bond, Anderson allegedly bombarded Kuhbander with calls and threats. His mother, Jane Kuhbander, said her son told her Anderson "was blowing up his phone, and he said that she had threatened that she was going to commit suicide," as reported by PEOPLE.
Despite the warning signs, few could have imagined the violence that followed.
A Family's Worst Nightmare
The Kuhbander family now faces the unbearable grief of losing their son to a tragedy they never saw coming. Jane Kuhbander described the crushing reality: "You don't want to be in this position. And when you see it on television, I can see how they feel. Then it hits you like I am that person," PEOPLE reported.
The tragedy leaves more than just shattered families in its wake — it shines a harsh light on the dangers of domestic violence, unresolved emotional turmoil, and the urgent need for intervention before despair turns deadly.
