Halloween Party Ends in Horror

By Mia R. • Oct 04, 2024

On Oct. 31, 2019, a Halloween party in Orinda, California, turned into a scene of tragedy when gunfire erupted, leaving five people dead and several others injured. The shooting, which took place at an Airbnb® rental, continues to haunt the community and the victims' families four years later.

What Happened in Orinda?

The mass shooting occurred around 10:50 p.m. at a house in Orinda, a small-town northeast of Oakland. The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office received reports of shots fired, and upon arrival, officers encountered a chaotic scene with over 100 attendees, many fleeing the property. Three people died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. Authorities discovered two firearms at the site, but no arrests have been made, and the suspect or suspects remain at large.

The party was advertised on social media, drawing attendees from across the Bay Area. The Airbnb host, Michael Wang, said he rented the house to a woman who claimed it was for a small family reunion with 12 guests. However, security footage revealed far more people were present — more than 100. Despite Wang's attempts to enforce the guest limit, the party continued until the fatal shooting.

Who Were the Victims?

The victims of the shooting were identified as 22-year-old Tiyon Farley, 24-year-old Omar Taylor, 23-year-old Ramon Hill Jr., 29-year-old Javin County, and 19-year-old Oshiana Tompkins. Many were students from Laney College in nearby Oakland. Their deaths have left a deep void in their families' lives, turning Halloween into a time of mourning rather than celebration. At least four other people were injured in the shooting.

Airbnb's Response

Airbnb confirmed that the party was unauthorized and that they have permanently banned the guest who made the booking from using their platform. In a statement to TIME, the company expressed its shock and sadness over the incident, saying, "We are horrified by this tragedy and are in close communication with Chief David Cook of Orinda Police to offer our support with his investigation into who committed this senseless violence." The statement added, "Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the victims of this abhorrent act as well as the neighbors of the home."

In response, Airbnb implemented new policies, including banning one-night rentals for Halloween parties and using AI technology to block high-risk bookings during the holiday.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation into the shooting remains active and unresolved. Despite initial arrests, all suspects have been released, and authorities have not provided updates on any new leads. Four years later, the case is still considered open, and the community is urged to come forward with any information that could help solve this tragic incident.

A Search for Answers

For the Orinda community, the mass shooting left a lasting scar. Although the neighborhood has returned to its quiet state, the tragedy has left a mark that will not fade for those who lost loved ones. Four years later, the families of the victims are still waiting for justice. The investigation remains open, and authorities urge anyone with information to come forward. For the victims' families, the lack of closure adds to their suffering, transforming what should be a festive time into a period of grief.

The Orinda shooting serves as a reminder of how quickly a celebration can turn into a nightmare. As the community waits for answers, there is hope that those responsible will one day be held accountable, providing some measure of peace to those still mourning.
