Inside the $100K Jewelry Heist by a UPS® Driver
Criminal charges have been brought against a United Parcel Service employee in Indianapolis accused of orchestrating a significant theft operation that targeted high-value packages. The suspect, Dennis Butterfield, allegedly stole over $100,000 worth of jewelry and other valuable metals from the UPS® Distribution Center on 86th Street. The discovery of his crimes has left a trail of missing items, many of which held deep sentimental value for their owners.
The Alleged Scheme
The case came to light when a manager at the distribution center noticed suspicious behavior by Butterfield, who worked as a truck driver. Starting in September, the employee reportedly began pilfering shipping boxes, particularly those containing expensive jewelry. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) was called in to investigate, and what they uncovered was a methodical scheme.
According to Det. Keith Hartman of IMPD's Criminal Interdiction Section, Butterfield knew precisely which packages to target. He would enter high-value trailers at the end of his late-night shifts, discreetly selecting and removing the boxes he wanted. His actions were deliberate, and his knowledge of what to look for made it easy for him to steal the items unnoticed.
Selling the Stolen Goods
After securing the stolen goods, Butterfield allegedly pawned them at a local pawn shop in Greenwood or sold them online to a jewelry store in Florida. He received certified checks for these transactions, further fueling his theft spree. Detective Hartman played a pivotal role in setting up a sting operation to catch Butterfield in the act, ultimately leading to his arrest.
Court records indicate that the total value of the stolen items is estimated to be around $140,000. While some of the stolen jewelry has been recovered, a significant portion remains missing. The stolen items were not just valuable in terms of money; many of them held sentimental value for the victims, making the thefts even more devastating.
Legal Consequences
In addition to the theft charges, Butterfield is facing two drug-related charges for allegedly possessing pills without a prescription. Despite the severity of the charges, he was able to post a small cash bond and was released from jail pending trial. He eventually pleaded guilty to theft and was sentenced to a short jail sentence and probation.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with stealing high-value items. As Hartman pointed out to CBS4 News, "You never know who's watching you," a sentiment that Butterfield learned the hard way. The story of Dennis Butterfield's alleged theft highlights the importance of vigilance and integrity in the workplace. While the financial losses are significant, the emotional impact on the victims is immeasurable. As the case progresses through the legal system, it stands as a cautionary tale for anyone tempted to betray the trust placed in them.
