Case overview
Jamie Faith was fatally shot outside his Oak Cliff home on October 9, 2020, during what initially appeared to be a random street robbery. Within weeks, investigators determined the attack had been planned, and the focus shifted to his wife, Jennifer Faith, and her communications with the shooter, Darrin Lopez, a man she had reconnected with months earlier.
The morning of the shooting
Jamie and Jennifer Faith were walking their dog near their home in the 900 block of South Waverly Drive in Dallas just after 7:30 a.m. when a black Nissan Titan pickup truck pulled up. A masked man exited the vehicle and shot Jamie Faith multiple times at close range. Jennifer Faith was physically restrained during the attack but not injured. The shooter fled in the truck, and Jamie Faith was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jennifer Faith told responding officers the attack appeared to be a robbery. She posted emotional appeals on social media in the days following the shooting, asking for help identifying the suspect and describing her husband as a devoted father and partner.
The investigation turns inward
Dallas Police began reviewing surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses. The black Nissan Titan was traced through highway cameras, and investigators identified the registered owner as Darrin Lopez, a Tennessee man Jennifer Faith had dated in high school. Lopez had traveled to Dallas on the morning of the shooting and returned to Tennessee hours later.
Lopez was arrested on January 11, 2021, and charged with interstate travel in the commission of murder-for-hire. During interviews, he told federal agents that Jennifer Faith had convinced him Jamie Faith was abusing her physically and emotionally. Lopez later admitted that Jennifer Faith had sent him fabricated images and messages falsely depicting abuse, including staged photographs and manipulated text exchanges.
Investigators recovered thousands of text messages, emails, and phone calls between Lopez and Jennifer Faith in the months leading up to the shooting. The communications revealed that Jennifer Faith had orchestrated the reconnection, encouraged Lopez to believe Jamie Faith was a threat, and provided detailed information about her husband’s daily routine, including the time and location of their morning walks.
Jennifer Faith’s arrest and federal charges
On February 24, 2021, Jennifer Faith was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice for concealing her communications with Lopez and for continuing to contact him after the shooting. Federal prosecutors later added a charge of use of interstate commerce in the commission of murder-for-hire.
Court filings revealed that Jennifer Faith had used a GoFundMe campaign to raise more than $60,000 in donations following Jamie Faith’s death, and that she had sent a portion of those funds to Lopez to cover his travel expenses and to purchase the weapon used in the shooting. She also used the funds to pay off credit card debt.
Prosecutors presented evidence that Jennifer Faith had sent Lopez explicit messages encouraging him to act, had provided photographs of Jamie Faith, and had confirmed details about his schedule and appearance. The communications continued after the shooting, with Jennifer Faith instructing Lopez to destroy his phone and avoid contact with law enforcement.
Lopez’s guilty plea and cooperation
Darrin Lopez pleaded guilty to murder-for-hire and use of a firearm in a crime of violence on February 11, 2022. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. As part of his plea agreement, Lopez cooperated with federal investigators and testified about the extent of Jennifer Faith’s involvement in planning the killing.
Lopez stated that he had believed Jennifer Faith’s claims of abuse and that he had not questioned the authenticity of the evidence she provided. He described feeling manipulated after learning the abuse allegations were fabricated and acknowledged full responsibility for carrying out the shooting.
Jennifer Faith’s guilty plea and sentencing
Jennifer Faith pleaded guilty to one count of use of interstate commerce in the commission of murder-for-hire on October 6, 2022. She admitted to orchestrating the killing and to using electronic communications to coordinate the attack. She also admitted to misleading investigators and donors in the aftermath of the shooting.
On May 26, 2023, Jennifer Faith was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole by U.S. District Judge Mary Lou Robinson. During the sentencing hearing, Jamie Faith’s family members delivered victim impact statements describing the devastation caused by his death and the betrayal represented by Jennifer Faith’s actions. Robinson described the crime as a calculated and sustained effort to manipulate Lopez and to exploit public sympathy.
Jennifer Faith did not address the court during sentencing. Her defense attorneys argued that she had experienced psychological trauma in her marriage and that her actions were influenced by emotional instability, but prosecutors presented evidence that the marriage had been stable and that financial pressures and an extramarital relationship had motivated the planning.
The digital evidence that defined the case
The murder of Jamie Faith is one of the most extensively documented cases of murder-for-hire coordination through electronic communications. Federal investigators recovered more than 14,000 text messages and hundreds of hours of phone calls between Jennifer Faith and Darrin Lopez. The communications detailed the progression of the plan, including discussions about timing, location, and methods.
Prosecutors also presented evidence that Jennifer Faith had used photo editing software to create false images of injuries and had fabricated text messages that appeared to show threatening behavior from Jamie Faith. Lopez was shown these materials over a period of months, and they formed the basis of his belief that he was helping Jennifer Faith escape an abusive situation.
The case highlighted the role of digital forensics in reconstructing motive and coordination in homicide investigations. Investigators used cell tower data, GPS tracking, and message metadata to establish timelines and to verify Jennifer Faith’s involvement at every stage of the planning and execution.
