CEO Killing Could Cost Heir Inheritance

By Maria W. • Dec 31, 2024

The grandmother of Luigi Mangione, the man accused of the murder of UnitedHealthCare® CEO Brian Thompson, reportedly left tens of millions of dollars to her children and grandchildren after she passed away on one condition: any grandchild who wanted to inherit money could not be "charged, indicted, convicted of, or plead guilty to a felony," as reported by PEOPLE.

The Charges

Luigi Mangione, 26, was charged in New York with second-degree murder, possession of a firearm, and forgery after his arrest on Dec. 9, according to an arrest warrant filed by the Manhattan District Attorney's office, as reported by PEOPLE. The charges relate to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Dec. 4, outside a Manhattan hotel. After the shooting, Mangione allegedly fled on a bicycle, and police lost track of him in Central Park, leading to a five-day manhunt before his arrest. The Wording of the Will

According to Local 12 News, Mary Mangione, Luigi's grandmother, left about $30 million to her living children and grandchildren after her death in 2023. The will reads:

"It is my precatory desire that the Trustees particularly consider invoking their discretion to implement this Section if the felony is a common law felony, a statutory felony if it is the codification of a common law felony, a heinous felony, any felony involving a physically violent act against another person or property or any drug related felony involving distribution or intent to distribute any type of drug or illegal substance. The decision of the Trustees is conclusive, final and binding on everyone. It is my precatory wish that the benefit of the doubt is not given to the individual."

Mary was known as the matriarch of her family and had built a successful life as a millionaire philanthropist in the Baltimore area. Mary was married to Nick Mangione, a real estate developer, and together they made a significant impact in their community. According to Fox News, she was well-regarded for her generosity and contributions to various causes throughout her life. Investigation and Arrest

Luigi Mangione was arrested after an employee at a McDonald's® in Altoona, PA, called the local police. PEOPLE reports that when Mangione was arrested, he had a "manifesto" with him, in which he criticized the U.S. health care system, writing, "these parasites had it coming." Investigators also found bullet casings at the scene of Thompson's death. The casings reportedly had the words "deny," "defend," and "depose" engraved on them. These words could be a reference to the phrase "deny, delay, defend," which is often used to describe tactics the insurance industry uses to avoid paying claims.

Luigi Mangione's story is one that has left many people shocked, especially considering his privileged background and the promising future he once had. Born into a wealthy family and educated at an elite school, his life took a dramatic turn that no one expected. His family's reputation, particularly his grandfather's success, contrasts sharply with the serious charges Luigi now faces. The questions surrounding his downfall have left many wondering how someone with such advantages could end up in such trouble.
