TLDR

Police say 18-year-old Loyola freshman Sheridan Gorman was fatally shot near a Chicago lakefront beach in the early morning hours, with a masked suspect fleeing on foot. No arrests have been announced, and investigators have not identified a motive.

Students walking near the campus-adjacent lakefront in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood encountered sudden gunfire, and an 18-year-old first-year student was left dead on the pavement. The shooter, masked and dressed in dark clothing, disappeared into the dark before police arrived.

According to Law & Crime and local outlet reporting, Gorman was pronounced dead at the scene near Tobey Prinz Beach after what residents described as a single gunshot in the early hours of March 19th, 2026. Chicago police have said the investigation is active and that the gunman remains unidentified.

The location, just north of Loyola University Chicago’s Lake Shore Campus, is a regular route for students headed to and from the lakefront. On this night, according to the Chicago Sun-Times and other outlets, a group of friends was walking together when a man approached and opened fire in their direction.

A Short Walk to the Lakefront Turns Fatal

Reporting from the Chicago Sun-Times indicates the shooting happened shortly after 1:30 a.m. on March 19th, 2026, near Tobey Prinz Beach. Gorman, walking with friends, was struck once in the head. Authorities said she was the only person hit.

According to ABC7 Chicago, detectives have suggested Gorman may not have been the intended target, although they have not publicly detailed what led them to that view. For now, officials classify the motive and any potential connection between the group and the shooter as unresolved.

Masked Suspect and Limited Leads

Witnesses told investigators the shooter wore dark clothing and a ski mask that obscured his face, then fled on foot, according to Law & Crime and local broadcast reports. That description, while specific in some respects, leaves little for detectives to use in identifying the suspect without additional video, forensic evidence, or witness detail.

Residents in the area reported hearing a single gunshot followed by screams. One student told local station WBBM that the sound woke him, underscoring how quickly the violence unfolded and how little time there was for anyone nearby to react or capture identifying information.

Campus Response and Safety Concerns

The killing has unsettled Loyola University Chicago, where Gorman had just begun her freshman year. In an official statement, university leaders said they were cooperating with law enforcement and providing counseling and support to students affected by the crime.

University President Mark C. Reed wrote, “It is with profound sadness that I write to share that one of our students, Sheridan Gorman, was killed earlier today in an incident north of the Lake Shore Campus,” adding that officials were in close contact with investigators and did not believe there was an ongoing threat to campus. Still, the fact that a student was fatally shot just off campus has prompted renewed scrutiny of off-campus safety and the limits of university security jurisdiction along the lakefront.

Police have not announced any suspects, charges, or recovered weapon, and they have not publicly described any clear investigative leads. They are urging anyone with information, including video from the surrounding blocks, to contact detectives or submit tips, a step that will likely determine whether this remains an unsolved killing or moves toward an arrest.
