Twenty-three years after the brutal murder of the beloved Maryland mom, authorities at last arrested Eugene Teodor Gligor, 44, a man whose connection to the victim was closer than anyone could have imagined: He was once the boyfriend of Preer's daughter, Lauren.
A Murder That Shook a Community
On May 2, 2001, Leslie Preer, a vibrant and well-loved woman, was found dead in her Chevy Chase, Maryland, home when she failed to show up for work. Her body was discovered face-down in the master bathroom shower, but investigators determined that her killer had attacked her in the foyer, inflicting fatal blunt force trauma and strangulation.
The crime scene told a chilling story: evidence of a violent struggle, blood spattered throughout the home, and signs that the perpetrator had attempted to clean up the aftermath. Despite collecting DNA evidence, investigators were stymied for decades, unable to identify the killer.
A Twist No One Saw Coming
Decades later in 2024, police have finally arrested a suspect for the murder - and it's actually someone who knew the family quite well. Gligor dated Preer's daughter, Lauren, during their teenage years and into college. The news blindsided Lauren, who recently encountered Gligor in a restaurant, describing him as acting entirely normal.
"How you can look somebody in the eye knowing that you committed this crime and act like nothing happened is pretty unreal," Lauren told People.
Lauren, who attended Gligor's recent court appearance with friends who also knew him, struggled to reconcile the man she once trusted with the horrifying allegations.
"Never in a million years did we think one of our people could hurt my mom like that," Lauren said, as reported in NBC Washington.
DNA Cracks the Case
Forensic genealogy, the same cutting-edge technology that has solved other cold cases, proved instrumental in identifying Gligor as the suspect. Using DNA collected from the crime scene long ago in 2001, investigators built a genealogical profile that eventually led them to Gligor decades later.
In June 2024, detectives obtained Gligor's DNA from a water bottle he discarded at Washington Dulles International Airport. The results were irrefutable: They matched the DNA found at the crime scene.
"Science doesn't lie. Technology doesn't lie," Montgomery County State's Attorney John McCarthy told NBC Washington.
Gligor, an international traveler, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Washington and has been charged with first-degree murder. He is being held without bond as prosecutors argue he poses a flight risk.
Decades of Questions, Finally Answered
The arrest marks a turning point in a case that haunted the Chevy Chase, Maryland, community for more than two decades. While the motive for the crime remains unclear, the breakthrough has brought a measure of closure to Preer's loved ones.
Lauren, who was 24 at the time of her mother's death, expressed relief and disbelief at the same time. "It's been a hell of a day," she told People.
Adding to the layers of tragedy is the realization that the suspect had been in their midst all along. One of Gligor's former neighbors even told police she suspected him back in 2002, though no evidence linked him to the crime at the time.
