It should have been nothing more than a ritual to ease a child's mind: a quick peek under the bed and a soothing word. But in one Kansas home, that innocent routine took a terrifying turn. When a babysitter checked under the bed of the child she was watching, she didn't find dust bunnies or forgotten toys. She found a man. He wasn't supposed to be there.

A Routine Check Turns Dangerous

On the evening of March 24, a babysitter was caring for children at a residence just outside Great Bend, Kansas. As bedtime approached, one of the children expressed fear that a "monster" was hiding under their bed. Hoping to calm the child, the babysitter did what any adult would do: she knelt down and looked beneath the bed.

That's when things went from typical to terrifying.

According to a statement from the Barton County Sheriff's Office, the babysitter came face-to-face with a man — later identified as 27-year-old Martin Villalobos Jr. Police said Villalobos had previously lived at the residence but was legally prohibited from returning due to a protection from abuse order.

An altercation immediately broke out between Villalobos and the babysitter, during which one of the children was "knocked over," according to ABC News. Authorities did not specify whether anyone was seriously injured. Villalobos allegedly then fled the scene before deputies arrived. It's unclear how long Villalobos had been hiding in the home or how he entered.

A Dangerous Man

Law enforcement responded to the call around 10:30 p.m. that night, launching a search for the suspect that extended into the following morning.

Though Villalobos initially evaded capture, deputies spotted him in the same neighborhood the next day. According to police, he attempted to flee on foot, but was arrested after a short chase.

As reported by PEOPLE, Villalobos was booked and now faces a series of requested charges, including aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, child endangerment, felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer, and violation of a protection from abuse order. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

According to court records, Villalobos had previously posted bond less than two weeks earlier for separate charges — including criminal threat, domestic battery, and violating a protection order tied to incidents that occurred in January and February.

A Child's Intuition or Something Else?

The babysitter, whose name has not been released publicly, reportedly identified Villalobos as the intruder. Though the details of her relationship with the family remain undisclosed, her quick thinking and ability to alert authorities likely prevented a worse outcome.

While the idea of a "monster under the bed" is usually dismissed as a bedtime story, this case proves that sometimes children's fears are rooted in something very real.
