NJ Man Accused of Stabbing His Fiancée to Death 1 Day After Proposing
A shocking tragedy unfolded in Elizabeth, New Jersey when 52-year-old Jose Melo allegedly stabbed his fiancée, 31-year-old Naket Jadix Trinidad Maldonado, to death just one day after proposing to her. The incident, which occurred on Dec. 30, 2024, has left the local community and her family grieving and searching for answers.
Till Death Do Us Part
On Dec. 29, 2024, Melo publicly proposed to the 31-year-old Maldonado at Bamboleo Night Club. A video posted to Melo's Facebook page captured the moment as he dropped to one knee while the song "Cásate Conmigo" by Silvestre Dangond and Nicky Jam played in the background. Onlookers cheered as Maldonado accepted the proposal, seemingly marking the start of a happy new chapter for the couple. "I love you baby Flaka Naky Bella," Melo wrote in the caption, tagging Maldonado's profile.
Less than 24 hours later, police responded to a call at 9:12 a.m. on Dec. 30 reporting a stabbing at a residence on Florida Street. Upon arrival, officers found Maldonado dead at the scene.
Melo's Dark Past Resurfaces
Melo, a registered sex offender, has a criminal history that includes a 2010 conviction for aggravated criminal sexual contact. Records show he threatened a woman with a box cutter before sexually assaulting her. Despite his troubling past, Maldonado seemingly loved and trusted Melo, making the alleged crime even more devastating to her family and friends.
Authorities have yet to determine a motive for the murder. Melo now faces charges of first-degree murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon.
Two Children Left Without a Mother
Maldonado was a mother of two young daughters who are now left without either parent. Her aunt, Yolanda De, wrote, "Naky was senselessly taken from us on December 30 in an act of evil" on a GoFundMe page created to support the children and cover funeral expenses.
"This horrible act by someone she trusted left her two children without either parent and with very little options for their future," De wrote.
In an update, De assured supporters that the children are safe and being cared for by family while permanent arrangements are made.

Maldonado's family and the local community remain in shock, mourning the senseless loss of a young mother who was just beginning a new chapter in life. Supporters and family members are focused on ensuring her daughters' well-being while celebrating the life of a woman whose vibrant spirit touched many.
