Holiday Rescue: Boy Found Floating in Giant Bubble on Christmas Eve

A relaxing family boat trip turned into a dramatic rescue mission on Christmas Eve when Rafael Graça do Prado, 32, spotted an alarming sight off Lazaro Beach in Ubatuba, São Paulo, Brazil. Floating adrift in the open sea was a transparent plastic bubble with a young boy, around 8 years old, trapped inside.

A Beach Game Turned Dangerous

The boy had been playing inside the inflatable ball on the beach, secured by a rope. But when the rope snapped, the bubble was dragged into open water by strong winds. Rafael Graça do Prado, a 32-year-old tourism boat operator, spotted the unusual sight while boating with his children.

"I was worried about whether he was able to breathe or not," Prado said according to the Daily Mail. "There is a certain amount of time that you can breathe inside it."

As Prado approached, he saw the boy waving inside the partially punctured bubble, visibly frightened but still responsive. To keep the boy calm, Prado reassured him while assessing the situation.

"I calmed him down, and that was when my daughter started filming.” he said, according to Daily Mail.

A Delicate Rescue

Prado called for help from his friend, Welington Junior, who arrived in a speedboat equipped for the task. Together, they decided not to unzip the ball, fearing it might deflate or cause the panicked boy to jump into the water. Instead, they threaded a rope through the bubble and carefully towed it back to shore.

"We put a rope through the bubble and dragged it as fast as we could, because we couldn't go too fast, or we could hurt the boy," Prado explained, according to Daily Mail.

Junior, who helped secure the bubble, shared his concerns: "I was afraid it would deflate with him inside," he said, according to the Daily Mail.

The rescue team worked slowly and methodically to ensure the boy's safety, successfully bringing him to shore where his tearful family waited. "We brought him to the beach and the family was very desperate, crying," Prado recounted, according to The Mirror UK.

A Warning for Beachgoers

The Maritime Firefighters Group later issued a warning about the dangers of using inflatable bubbles and similar floating devices at the beach, which are more suited for pools.

"This type of toy provides a false sense of security," said Captain Karoline Magalhães to Daily Mail. "For every three deaths at sea, a drowning process begins with floating objects."

She emphasized the risks posed by objects like inflatable balls, surfboards, and mattresses, which can easily be carried away by the wind and currents.

A Christmas Eve Miracle

The boy's safe rescue turned what could have been a holiday tragedy into a story of quick thinking and bravery. Prado's decision to act and Junior's assistance made all the difference, as they worked together to bring the boy back to safety.

For the boy's family, this Christmas Eve will be remembered not just as a day of relief, but as a moment of profound gratitude for the strangers who saved their son.
