TLDR
In a Rockaway Beach parking lot, what began as a vehicle striking a pregnant woman carrying her toddler quickly became a criminal case involving a stabbing allegation. Tillamook County deputies say a passenger from the Jeep is now charged with first-degree assault. All three members of the family survived, according to the sheriff’s office.
According to a Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office news release described by Law & Crime, 25-year-old Izac Rutledge was a passenger in a silver Jeep Patriot that hit the woman as she walked through the Rockaway Beach Wayside parking area with her husband and 2-year-old child. Investigators say Rutledge then stabbed the husband after he confronted the driver.
Parking Lot Collision Leads to Stabbing Allegation
Deputies said the collision happened around 1 p.m. as the family crossed the lot. After the Jeep allegedly struck the woman, the driver stopped, and the husband approached her to question what had happened. Investigators allege Rutledge got out of the passenger seat during that confrontation and stabbed the man in the back with a weapon before returning to the Jeep, which left the scene.
Deputies said the woman driving the Jeep traveled only a few blocks before stopping and later walked back to the parking lot, where she cooperated with investigators. Rutledge allegedly fled on foot, attempting to avoid detection by changing his clothing, according to the sheriff’s office. Sheriff Josh Brown said, “This incident escalated quickly,” and he credited witnesses and deputies with helping prevent more severe injuries.
From Arrest to Upcoming Court Appearance
Law & Crime reported that deputies found Rutledge a short time later and took him into custody without further incident. The sheriff’s office said the pregnant woman and her 2-year-old son suffered undisclosed injuries but were expected to be okay, while the husband was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a stab wound and is expected to recover.
According to the sheriff’s office, Rutledge is facing charges of first-degree assault, menacing, unlawful use of a weapon, and disorderly conduct. He is scheduled to be arraigned on April 3rd in Tillamook County. At arraignment in Oregon, defendants are formally advised of the charges and may enter an initial plea, while more detailed evidence typically emerges through later hearings and filings. All allegations against Rutledge remain unproven, and he is presumed innocent unless and until prosecutors secure a conviction.
The parking lot incident in Rockaway Beach is moving quickly from a brief clash to a felony case that will unfold in court over months, not minutes. As filings and hearings proceed, the public record will show whether the initial account from deputies is reinforced, refined, or disputed.
