TLDR

Murrieta police say a January 2026 apartment death was a contract killing for financial gain, arresting an ex-girlfriend and three men across three states as the case shifts from active investigation to preparation for potential prosecution.

The death of Aaron “AJ” Parr in a Murrieta, California, apartment began as a local homicide investigation. Within weeks, it had expanded into a coordinated effort with agencies in Georgia and Alabama, raising complex questions about planning, motive, and jurisdiction.

Officers from the Murrieta Police Department were called to The Arbors at California Oaks complex on January 13th, 2026, where they found the 30-year-old Parr dead inside a unit. Detectives immediately treated the case as a homicide and, according to police, started preserving digital and physical evidence.

From Apartment Death to Multistate Investigation

Family members later identified Parr as a son, brother, and father. As investigators traced his recent contacts and communications, Murrieta police described the emerging case as “unusual” for the community, which is generally viewed as having lower crime rates compared with many U.S. cities.

Within a little more than two weeks, detectives arrested Ignacia Perkins, described by police as Parr’s ex-girlfriend, and James Petri, an acquaintance of Perkins. Authorities allege the killing was not spontaneous, but part of a broader plan that required coordination beyond California.

Alleged Financial Motive and Criminal Charges

According to Murrieta police, the case centers on an alleged murder carried out for financial gain, with a wider conspiracy behind it. Investigators worked with law enforcement agencies in multiple states, including Brookhaven Police and North Metro SWAT in Georgia, and FBI teams in Alabama.

On March 18th, officers arrested Jerry Wheeler, 34, in Brookhaven, Georgia, and Kenneth Maxwell, 39, in Midfield, Alabama. Police say Wheeler and Maxwell each face counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, along with a special-circumstance allegation that the killing was done for financial gain.

Family Grief and the Road Ahead

For Parr’s relatives, reported developments in the case have brought only partial relief. In a public social media post, a woman identifying herself as Parr’s sister wrote, “The world kept moving, but ours stopped the day we lost you,” adding that not a moment passes without thinking of him.

She later described the arrests as bringing “a small sense of relief,” while emphasizing that nothing can undo the loss. A fundraiser organized for the family portrays Parr as a beloved son and brother and notes that donations are intended to help cover funeral and related expenses.

Authorities say the recent arrests largely conclude the active investigative phase, with detectives now focused on preparing the case for possible trial. As Wheeler and Maxwell await extradition to California, all four arrested individuals remain accused, not convicted, and the full contours of the alleged plot have not yet been made public.
