'Seafood Slaying' Rocks Mexican Town Already Reeling

Just days after the violent death of its police chief, a small Mexican city is once again in mourning — and on edge. A senior government official was fatally shot while dining out, marking yet another shocking chapter in a town gripped by cartel violence and public distrust.

A Quiet Dinner Turns Deadly

On April 28, just before 5 p.m., 35-year-old Jose Luis Pereida Robles, Secretary General of the Teocaltiche City Council, was eating at a seafood restaurant in Teocaltiche, a city in the northeastern corner of Jalisco state, when gunmen reportedly opened fire.

By the time the police and emergency services arrived, Pereida had already succumbed to his wounds. According to the Jalisco state prosecutor's office, no arrests have been made, and the motive remains under investigation, as reported by the New York Post.

The brazen attack came just two weeks after another chilling incident: the assassination of Teocaltiche's police chief, Ramón Grande Moncada. On April 15, Moncada was ambushed while driving with his wife. He was reportedly shot three times and killed instantly. His wife, who also sustained gunshot wounds, but survived.

A Town Under Siege

Teocaltiche is no stranger to bloodshed. The area has experienced a surge in violence in recent years, fueled by turf wars between organized crime groups. The Jalisco New Generation cartel — designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. government — has been linked to much of the unrest.

In February, eight police officers vanished while en route to Guadalajara. The remains of four of them were later found in plastic bags along a roadside. Fearing corruption and infiltration, state officials temporarily seized control of the local police department.

The city's government has not been silent. In public statements, officials have demanded action and criticized state leaders for what they describe as inaction and indifference. "Every life lost, every family broken, every night spent, are wounds that cry for justice. We can't and shouldn't get used to living like this," the administration posted on Facebook, according to the New York Post. "We demand clear and overwhelming answers for the State and the Federation. We demand real protection for our people. We demand the restoration of peace, security and dignity of our homes."

Violence Beyond Teocaltiche

While Jalisco has drawn attention for its cartel violence, the wave of attacks on politicians extends far beyond the region. From Guerrero to Veracruz, the past year has seen a disturbing trend of mayors, council members, and candidates targeted for assassination. In one particularly gruesome case last October, a newly elected mayor was found decapitated just six days into his term. And in December 2024, a sitting congressman from the ruling coalition was gunned down in Veracruz state.

Analysts say these attacks are often meant to intimidate public servants or seize control of municipal resources through fear.

No Answers, Just Questions

As residents of Teocaltiche grapple with the second high-profile killing in two weeks, they're left wondering who's next? With no suspects in custody and the motive for Pereida's murder still unclear, fear is mounting.

Meanwhile, U.S. officials have updated travel advisories, warning tourists to avoid parts of Jalisco due to risks of kidnapping, robbery, and cartel clashes. The advisory notes that even popular areas have seen shootouts injuring or killing bystanders.

For now, the people of Teocaltiche mourn yet another public servant lost to violence — and brace themselves for what may come next.
