'She's No Longer Here': The Chilling 911 Call That Led to a Murder Charge-1

On Feb. 19, 2025, a chilling 911 call rocked the quiet town of Cary, North Carolina. Travis Huff, 40, calmly told the dispatcher, "There's been a murder," according to a report obtained by PEOPLE. Police arrived at CubeSmart, a self-storage facility where Huff's girlfriend, Rebecca Rene Carter, 41, worked and lived. Inside her apartment, officers found Carter dead with a knife still lodged in her chest. Huff allegedly confessed to the brutal killing, leaving the community stunned and searching for answers.

The Night That Turned Deadly

Huff allegedly told police that he and Carter fought the night before. Afterward, they went to a bar, had drinks, and returned to her apartment. According to the warrant, the argument escalated into "pushing, arguing, and shoving" before Huff claimed he "lost control" and strangled Carter, as reported by PEOPLE. Thinking she was dead, Huff allegedly stabbed her in the chest — twice — to make sure.

According to police, Huff then covered Carter's body with a comforter and left the apartment. But the horror didn't end there. Huff reportedly told police he returned later with a friend, smoked crack cocaine, and sat in the apartment while Carter's body lay in the bedroom.

The Chilling 911 Call

The next day at 12:24 p.m., Huff allegedly called 911 and made a blunt confession. "She's no longer here," Huff reportedly said, according to the search warrant obtained by PEOPLE. "I killed her."

When the police arrived, Huff surrendered without a fight. He allegedly admitted to the crime and told police he had also texted Carter's boss from her phone, claiming she was sick to avoid suspicion when she didn't show up for work.

Facing the Consequences

Authorities charged Huff with first-degree murder and held him without bond at the Wake County Detention Center. If convicted, Huff could face life in prison without parole or the death penalty.

Community in Shock

News of Carter's death devastated her friends and coworkers. Melvin Montgomery, a former colleague, told ABC 11 he was "very shocked." Carter's coworkers described her as kind and generous, with a "big heart," the outlet reported, according to PEOPLE.

What Happens Next

Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will pursue the death penalty. Meanwhile, Carter's family and friends struggle to process the sudden, violent loss. As the investigation continues, anyone with information is urged to contact the Cary Police Department at (919) 469-4012.
