31-Year-Old Gunned Down in Spilled Soda Road Rage

A shocking road rage incident in Bradenton, Florida, has resulted in a 26-year-old man being sentenced to decades in prison. What began as a minor altercation over spilled soda escalated into a deadly confrontation, leaving one man dead and another facing a long road behind bars.
The Incident That Shook a Community
On Oct. 12, 2021, a seemingly ordinary day turned into a nightmare on the streets of west Bradenton. Timothy P. Andricks, 31, and Nicholas Anthony Koontz, 26, were involved in a heated road rage altercation. According to prosecutors, Andricks cut off Koontz's car and retaliated by throwing a cup of soda at him, striking him in the temple. The situation quickly spiraled out of control.
After the drink was thrown, Andricks allegedly yelled and made threatening comments toward Koontz. Fueled by anger, Koontz turned his car around and pursued Andricks through a residential area. The confrontation came to a head when both men exited their vehicles near Seventh Avenue West and 50th Court West. Koontz fired 11 shots at Andricks, who collapsed in the street and died at the scene, in what was described by prosecutors as an "an act of road rage driven by anger," as reported by the Bradenton Herald.
Self-Defense or Escalation?
During his trial, Koontz claimed he acted in self-defense, arguing that Andricks had made threats and approached him aggressively. However, prosecutors challenged this narrative. They highlighted doorbell camera footage that showed Andricks unarmed as he exited his car and walked toward Koontz's vehicle. Koontz's decision to follow Andricks — rather than report the incident to authorities — became a focal point of the prosecution's case. "The defendant created this situation. He escalated this situation. He made it worse and then complained when it went foul," Assistant State Attorney Suzanne O’Donnell said during the trial, as reported by the Bradenton Herald.
In closing arguments, Assistant State Attorney Rebecca Freel questioned the reasonableness of Koontz's actions, emphasizing that "there was no basis to believe that Mr. Andricks had a gun," as reported by the Bradenton Herald.
A Lengthy Sentence for a Senseless Act
In April 2023, Koontz was convicted of manslaughter with a firearm, a lesser charge than the original murder count. This past September, Circuit Judge Frederick Mercurio sentenced Koontz to 25 years in prison, with an additional five years of probation upon release. The sentence also requires Koontz to undergo mental health and substance abuse evaluations.
While Koontz's defense team expressed disappointment at the conviction, noting he was not found guilty of murder, prosecutors argued that his actions demonstrated a clear escalation of the conflict. Koontz has since filed an appeal, signaling his intent to challenge the verdict.
Lessons and Lingering Questions
This tragic case highlights the devastating consequences of impulsive actions. A minor altercation over spilled soda led to a life lost and another irreparably changed. For the Bradenton community, the incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly emotions can boil over — with life-altering consequences.
As Koontz begins his prison sentence and Andricks' family mourns their loss, the case leaves lingering questions about road rage, self-defense laws, and the choices people make in moments of anger.
