The Beginning of a Beautiful Story

Bill Hassinger and Joanne Blakkan's journey began on a school bus to North Muskegon High School, Michigan. Their high school romance blossomed with Blakkan saving a seat for Hassinger. Despite the 2-year age difference, with Blakkan joking about "robbing the cradle," their connection grew deeper, culminating in a prom date in 1949. However, as they pursued different paths — Blakkan to Michigan State and Hassinger to the military — their contact faded.

Lives Apart, Yet United in Memory

Over the decades, both Hassinger and Blakkan built lives with others, marrying and starting families. Hassinger enjoyed a long marriage and a career with the state police, while Blakkan started a family and pursued her education and career later in life. Despite their separate lives, the memory of their young love lingered.

A Reunion Decades in the Making

The spark was reignited when Blakkan's daughter Linda, intrigued by her widowed mother's past, discovered Hassinger was a mere 80 miles away and his wife had passed away. Encouraged by her daughter, Blakkan reached out with a letter, leading to a reunion that felt like no time had passed. Hassinger's heart was won over once more, proving that authentic connections withstand the test of time.

"[Linda Blakkan] made me feel very, very welcome in their family, as did her husband and children. And it still carries out that way. I feel very comfortable," Hassinger told Fox News.

Love Knows No Age

Now, Hassinger and Blakkan make the most of their time together, understanding the preciousness of each moment. From playing cards to spending time with family, they cherish their second chance at love. Blakkan's advice, reported by Fox News, is simple yet profound: "If you feel the love for each other, then just spend time together because life is short."

"We don't know how much time we have together, but we're just making the most of every day," Joanne Blakkan reflects on her rekindled romance with Bill Hassinger. Their story is a beautiful reminder that it's never too late for love.
