The Obsessive Killer Who Confessed His Murder on Reddit-1

In the quiet town of Kitchener, Ontario, a young woman's dream of a bright future was shattered in a storm of violence that no one saw coming — or perhaps no one wanted to believe. On April 28, 2017, police found 22-year-old Melinda Vasilije's lifeless body in her apartment. She had been stabbed 47 times, her hopes for marriage and motherhood cut tragically short. Her killer? Her ex-boyfriend, Ager Hasan, whose chilling post-murder behavior turned this case into a media sensation.

From Lovebirds to Tragedy

Vasilije and Hasan once seemed like any other couple in love, but their relationship masked deeper cracks. By April 2017, their romance had turned volatile, culminating in an argument so intense that it ended with Hasan breaking into Vasilije's home. He was arrested for assault and ordered to stay away from her — a directive he brazenly ignored the night she died.

That evening, Hasan drove back to Kitchener, breaking court orders. According to a now-deleted Reddit® post allegedly written by him, the two reconciled briefly. But their fragile peace crumbled when Vasilije confronted him about his infidelity during their breakup. The confrontation escalated, leaving Vasilije fatally wounded. Hasan claimed in the post that he acted in self-defense, but the evidence painted a far darker picture.

A Killer Goes Online

In an unprecedented twist, a user claiming to be Hasan posted a lengthy confession on Reddit titled "Wanted for Kitchener murder my side," as reported by The Independent. The post described the events of that fateful night, complete with screenshots of text messages between the couple:

As reported by The Independent, an excerpt from the deleted Reddit post read:

"She started freaking out. Wouldn't say a word and just kept slapping me with tears in her eyes. Slaps turned into hits. I told her I was sorry but if she didn't stop I'd do something back. She didn't stop. I then stupidly pushed her, harder than I expected. She fell against the sink ... almost out no where she grabs a knife by the sink. Initially I thought was just going to hold it to try and tell me to leave. She doesn't. She comes at me in full force, aiming towards my face. I tell her to stop. She doesn't, I tried grabbing the knife but ended up cutting my hands. After a few cuts I lost it. I freaked out, I was scared and in a state of shock. Never in a hundred years did I think she would use a knife against me. Out of shock and fear I grab one. I hit her with it, almost blindly. A few times. I didn't know what happened. I was confused, shocked and scared."

Police confirmed they were evaluating the post as potential evidence. But even as Hasan tried to shape his narrative online, his actions told another story. Instead of calling for help, he fled the scene and crossed into the United States. Hours later, he sent a text to Melinda's phone, pretending everything was fine. Justice Gerry Taylor later called this act "shockingly negative evidence of the character of Ager Hasan," as reported by CBC.

The Hunt and the Arrest

Hasan eluded authorities for more than two months, slipping through borders and stealing license plates to stay on the run. However, his luck finally ran out on July 11, 2017, when Secret Service agents in San Antonio, Texas, arrested him during a counterfeit currency investigation. His capture ended the manhunt but ignited questions about his calculated behavior and lack of remorse.

A Verdict That Spoke Volumes

In 2023, a jury found Hasan guilty of second-degree murder. Justice Taylor rejected his claims of self-defense, pointing out that Hasan's attempts to fabricate evidence and deflect blame revealed a chilling indifference.

Justice Taylor also noted Hasan's behavior after the murder showed no compassion for the victim's family. At the sentencing hearing, prosecutors presented evidence that Hasan may have contacted Vasilije's mother through a fake Facebook® account. In the messages, he allegedly told her it was "partially your fault" that her daughter had died and callously added, "Oh well, you have other daughters," as reported by CBC.

Vasilije's mother, Anna Todorovic, spoke during the sentencing, sharing her heartbreak: "I'll never get to hold her babies. The day she died, I was destroyed," as reported by CBC.

Hasan received a life sentence with no chance of parole until 2033. Though he apologized in court, the damage had been done.
