Missing Texas Woman's Body Found, Arrest Made

The disappearance of 20-year-old Madeline Molina Pantoja in May 2023 captured the attention of a nation, sparking an outpouring of support from her Midland, Texas, community and beyond. A beloved daughter, sister, and friend, Madeline vanished after an argument with her ex-boyfriend, 24-year-old Mario Juan Chacon, Jr. What began as a frantic search ended in heartbreak when her remains were found in a remote area nine days later. As the case progresses, questions remain unanswered, leaving her family and community searching for justice.
The Days Leading Up to Her Disappearance
On May 9, 2023, Madeline was dropped off at her apartment by a friend around 11 p.m. By the following evening, her brother received a call from Chacon, who claimed the two had argued and that Madeline wasn't answering his calls. The last confirmed contact came around 8:35 p.m. that night when Madeline's brother spoke with her. She sounded upset, presumably due to the argument. A short while later, she stopped responding to texts and calls.
The next day, her friends and family began to worry when she didn't show up for pre-arranged plans. Her apartment door was locked, and her phone, keys, and purse were left behind – along with her car parked outside. Her dog, which she adored, had been left without food or water, a detail her loved ones knew was out of character.
Clues Emerge as a Community Rallies
In the days following her disappearance, Madeline's family and friends worked tirelessly to find her. They raised more than $20,000 for a reward through a GoFundMe® campaign and took to social media platforms like TikTok® to spread awareness. The Midland Police Department joined the effort, using drones, helicopters, and search teams to comb through more than 60 square miles of remote property.
Evidence began to point to Chacon. Security footage and cellphone records traced his truck's movements between Madeline's apartment and a rural area south of Midland in the early hours of May 11, 2023. A neighbor reported hearing a woman scream from Madeline's apartment around 1:30 a.m., further deepening suspicions.
A Heartbreaking Discovery
On May 20, 2023, search efforts led authorities to human remains near County Road 190, just three miles from Chacon's home. Jewelry at the scene helped identify the remains as Madeline's. While the exact cause of death has not been publicly confirmed, court documents suggest she suffered physical abuse, strangulation, and suffocation.
Hours after the discovery, Chacon was arrested and charged with her murder. He remains in custody on a $3 million bond. Despite an indictment handed down in July 2023, he has yet to face trial, and his defense continues to push for a change of venue, citing widespread publicity and public demonstrations as obstacles to a fair trial.
One Year Later: Searching for Justice
More than one year later, her family and friends are left grappling with the loss of a vibrant young woman who had her entire life ahead of her. While Chacon awaits trial, the community continues to honor her memory and advocate for justice.
As the investigation unfolds, Madeline's story is a sobering reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the devastating impact it has on families and communities. It calls attention to the urgent need for resources and support for those who may be in abusive relationships.
