A quiet afternoon in a historic Florida cemetery took a scandalous turn when troopers discovered a married woman and her lover engaged in sexual activity atop a grave. What began as a routine stop for a K9 break quickly spiraled into a bizarre scene involving public sex, drugs, and a car registered to the woman's unsuspecting husband. The encounter ended with the woman landing herself in jail and a growing trail of charges.

The Unexpected Discovery

On March 27, 2025, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper W.R. Kelly pulled into the Wild Cow Prairie Cemetery in Sumter County to let his K9 out for a break. He noticed a white Nissan with its windows down but no one around. After a short search, he found 46-year-old Stephanie Kay Wegman and 38-year-old Joseph Luke Brown having sex at the edge of the cemetery.

Troopers interrupted the encounter, asking both individuals to return to their car and provide identification. They complied, retrieving clothes and IDs from the car, which was registered to Wegman and her husband, Anthony Johnson.

From Passion to Prosecution

After Wegman and Brown returned to the car, troopers performed what's known as a "free air sniff" around the vehicle — a legal method where a K9 walks around the exterior. The dog allegedly picked up a "trained odor," according to Law & Crime, prompting a full search of the car. Inside, officers discovered methamphetamine, Xanax, and Oxycodone. Wegman admitted the drugs were hers and was taken into custody.

Behind Bars

Wegman is facing a growing list of charges. State troopers initially charged her with trafficking Oxycodone and two counts of possessing controlled substances. The Sumter County Sheriff's Office later added more charges, including possession of marijuana, methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia (two counts), and an additional count of drug possession. According to court records, Wegman had been arrested just three weeks earlier on separate charges for possessing drug paraphernalia, as reported by PEOPLE.

She remains in custody without bond and is scheduled for arraignment on May 12. Brown, meanwhile, was taken to a hospital due to a leg injury and was not immediately charged, though troopers indicated a warrant may be forthcoming.

The cemetery, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, became an unexpected scene of both scandal and a drug bust. Authorities have not yet explained why Brown was allowed to walk free, even though both parties were involved and drugs were found in the vehicle.
