In a scene reminiscent of the Wild West, Albuquerque police officers mounted on horses chased down a shoplifting suspect through the streets of New Mexico. On March 20, 2024, Albuquerque police were alerted to a suspected shoplifter, Mark Chacon, who had reportedly stolen $230 worth of merchandise from a Walgreens. Officer Charles Breeden, a member of the Albuquerque Police Department's horse patrol, recorded the event with his bodycam, capturing the rare sight of a high-speed chase involving horses. The chase began with Breeden galloping after Chacon, who repeatedly evaded capture despite several close encounters with the pursuing officers.
Mounted Police to the Rescue
As Chacon led Breeden and his horse through the parking lot and into the streets, traffic was disrupted, and onlookers watched in disbelief. The video from Breeden's bodycam shows him commanding Chacon to stop, warning that force would be used if he didn't comply. Despite Chacon's claims of innocence, the pursuit continued until Breeden's colleagues on horses arrived to assist.
The Capture
With the arrival of two additional horse-mounted officers, Chacon found himself surrounded. One officer dismounted to handcuff the suspect, bringing the unusual chase to an end. Chacon was charged with shoplifting, resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He remarked that those who attempt to flee from the police in Albuquerque could expect to end up in jail, and likely quite tired from the effort.
