What Happened Before a Fan Plunged 20 Feet at a Baseball Game?

In the middle of what should have been a typical spring ballgame, a sudden fall from the bleachers at PNC Park in Pittsburgh turned a night of celebration into a nightmare. While the scoreboard told the story of a Pirates rally, the more unforgettable — and haunting — event unfolded just beyond the outfield fence. Now, one young man faces criminal charges for allegedly buying the beer that may have changed everything.
A Celebration Turns to Chaos
It was the seventh inning of the April 30, 2025, game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs when 20-year-old Kavan Markwood fell over the railing in right field, plunging over 20 feet to the ground below.
Witnesses described the moment as sudden and surreal — Markwood, an enthusiastic fan, leapt up to celebrate a go-ahead double by Pirates star Andrew McCutchen, and somehow, his momentum carried him over the edge.
Amy Thompson, a spectator sitting nearby, told WTAE that it looked like "he catapulted himself" over the railing after grabbing the fence to cheer, according to ABC 7 News.
The Investigation and the Charges
In the days that followed, Pennsylvania State Police began piecing together what happened in the hours leading up to the fall. Their investigation led to 21-year-old Ethan Kirkwood, a friend of Markwood's from McKeesport, a suburb southeast of Pittsburgh. Kirkwood is now facing two counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor after allegedly buying the beer that Markwood drank that night.
According to the criminal complaint, surveillance footage captured Kirkwood purchasing two 24-ounce cans of Miller Lite from a bar inside the stadium shortly before 7 p.m. He was later seen handing one of the cans to Markwood. Another round of beer purchases came later, again caught on camera, and shortly after, Markwood fell.
When officers interviewed Markwood's girlfriend, she confirmed that he drank two beers inside the park. Kirkwood allegedly admitted to buying the alcohol.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 23. As of May 21, Kirkwood was not in custody, and it remains unclear whether he has retained legal counsel.
'Accidental,' But Not Forgotten
The Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety has labeled the incident an accident, but the criminal case suggests the legal system may take a broader view of responsibility.
Markwood survived the fall but suffered significant injuries, including a broken neck, clavicle, and back. His recovery has been slow, but as of early May, he was beginning to take his first steps again. A fundraiser set up by his girlfriend's mother, Jennifer Phillips, had raised more than $67,000 by late May to help cover his medical care and recovery.
Phillips shared an update on May 6, saying, "He still has a long way to go ... but he's showing real strength, and we're staying hopeful for a smooth recovery," according to ABC 7 News.
A Legal Gray Zone
The legal line between friendship and accountability is thin — and growing thinner in this case. While Markwood's fall has been deemed accidental, the decision to purchase beer for someone under 21 has led to criminal charges with real stakes for Kirkwood.
It's a reminder that even everyday actions — like grabbing a drink at a ballgame — can have life-altering consequences. As summer games continue to draw crowds to stadiums across the country, this case may spark broader conversations about responsibility, risk, and what it means to take care of your friends when the drinks are flowing and the fences are too low.
