A man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing his ex-wife just hours after they appeared on an episode of the "Jerry Springer Show" about love triangles. Ralf Panitz, 42, was convicted of second-degree murder in March 2002 for the 2000 death of Nancy Campbell-Panitz, 52. The jury, after discussing the case for 18 hours over two days, also found him guilty of breaking a domestic violence order. How did a TV show — one that many people don't take seriously — result in a brutal murder?

The Show

In May 2000, married couple Ralf and Eleanor Panitz — and Ralf's ex-wife Nancy Campbell-Panitz — traveled to Chicago to be part of a taping for a "Jerry Springer Show" episode called "Secret Mistresses Confronted." The couple reportedly went on the show to confront Nancy and tell her to stop stalking them. During the episode, they made it clear that they wanted her to leave them alone, resulting in a dramatic exchange. The situation between the three of them had supposedly been tense for some time.

Ralf Panitz, a German house painter, and Nancy Campbell-Panitz had divorced in 1999, but they continued living together off and on — even after Ralf's secret marriage to Eleanor in March 2000. The three members of the love triangle spent months accusing each other of domestic violence. During the show, the audience made fun of Nancy, calling her "fat" and "old," as reported by CBS News.

The Crime

A few month's later, on the morning of her death, Nancy reportedly went to court to ask a judge to force Ralf and Eleanor to leave her home in Sarasota, Florida. The judge agreed that the couple had to move out. Several people who testified during the murder trial said this made Ralf extremely angry.

Later that day, Nancy Campbell-Panitz was found dead in her home. She had been beaten so badly that identifying her body was almost impossible. Investigators reportedly believed Ralf and Eleanor's plan was to cross into Canada, but police tracked the couple down in Boston, where they finally gave themselves up. After they were captured, Ralf was taken back to Florida and charged with second-degree murder.

The Trial

During the trial, defense lawyer Geoffrey Fieger, previously know for representing Dr. Jack Kevorkian, brought in well-known criminologists to testify that there was no murder at all. Fieger argued Nancy had died from a heart attack during a fight with someone — but not with his client. However, prosecutors said 18 bloody footprints matched a shoe Ralf owned, and his DNA was found under his ex-wife's fingernails. Detectives said Nancy's face was so badly beaten she was unidentifiable to a deputy who had seen her earlier the same day. The jury found Ralf Panitz guilty of second-degree murder.

The Sentencing

At the May 2002 sentencing, Circuit Judge Nancy Donnellan's courtroom was packed with people eager to see the dramatic end of a highly publicized case — but convicted murderer Ralf Panitz was not there. Refusing to enter the courtroom, he watched the sentencing hearing from a different room at the Sarasota County Judicial Center. Jerry Springer was also absent.

"Ralf Panitz, Eleanor Panitz and Nancy Campbell were brought to Chicago by the Jerry Springer Show, then manipulated by producers of that show," Donnellan stated, as reported by US Weekly. "Are ratings more important than the dignity of human life? Shame on you. Shame on you."

Donnellan, an advocate for victims of domestic violence, flashed a photo of Nancy's body at the television camera broadcasting the hearing to Ralf. The photo, taken at the crime scene, showed Nancy in a purple dress, her face beaten almost beyond recognition. "Ralf Panitz, this is how she died," Donnellan said vehemently, as reported by AOL. "I sentence you to the only just sentence in this case, life in prison without the possibility of parole." Donnellan could have sentenced Ralf Panitz to as little as 20 years in prison. Eleanor, considered a witness to the crime, was soon released after paying a $25,000 bond and was promised immunity if she gave information about what had happened. Even though Ralf has been in prison since 2000, Eleanor has stayed married to him and has been very loyal and supportive, according to her social media.

The "Jerry Springer Show" murder case ended in a tragic way, highlighting the dangers of exploiting personal problems for entertainment. Ralf Panitz was convicted of killing his ex-wife, Nancy Campbell-Panitz, just a few months after they appeared on the show. The case showed how violent relationships and public exposure can have devastating consequences. Many people, including the judge, criticized the show's role in turning the couple's troubled relationship into a spectacle. It was a painful reminder of how serious real-life issues should not be treated as entertainment.
