Woman Missing in AZ Wilderness More Than a Year
What started as a road trip to a wedding in Connecticut turned into a haunting mystery when 32-year-old Chelsea Grimm vanished in Arizona. The California woman was last seen on Sept. 30, 2023, while camping near Ash Fork, Arizona. Her disappearance has left her family searching for answers and pleading for help.
A Sudden Change of Plans
Chelsea Grimm, a San Diego native, initially planned to drive to Connecticut for a wedding in her white Ford Focus SUV, accompanied by her pet bearded dragon, Roxy. On Sept. 24, 2023, she began her cross-country journey but soon decided to change plans, telling her parents she couldn't complete the trip alone. Instead, she opted to spend time camping in Arizona.
On Sept. 27, Grimm met a friend in Phoenix. The next day, she canceled plans to meet the same friend for lunch and instead headed to Williams, Arizona. That evening, body camera footage captured an encounter with a local police officer, who found Grimm near a cemetery. She was visibly upset, and explained she was photographing headstones.
"I just was doing a photo shoot of the lost soldiers and got a little emotional," she told the officer, according to AZFamily.com. Grimm told the officer she was considering camping in the area for the night but hadn't fully decided yet. She mentioned that staying until sunset hadn't been part of her original plan.
Disappearance in the Arizona Wilderness
The last known sighting of Grimm was on Sept. 30, when woodcutters spotted her camping in the Kaibab National Forest near Ash Fork. They reported she appeared fine, with no signs of distress. However, just days later, her abandoned car was found by hunters on a remote road with two flat tires. Her personal belongings, including clothing and prized camera she was rarely seen without, were still inside, but Grimm and her pet bearded dragon were missing.
A Family Desperate for Answers
Grimm's parents, Janet and Stephen Grimm, reported her missing on Oct. 4, and the Coconino County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation. Despite searches using police K-9 units and extensive community outreach, no significant leads have emerged.
The family has since hired a private investigator, who was able to find out that Grimm's cellphone activity ended abruptly in the woods where she was last seen camping. Diaries and journals found in her car revealed that she was struggling emotionally as she tried to cope with a recent breakup.
Janet described Grimm as a highly creative individual with a passion for photography and art. She earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees in psychology and aspired to become a therapist to support and guide troubled teenagers.
Continuing the Search
One year later, Grimm's parents remain steadfast in their efforts to find her. They've returned to Arizona to organize new searches and distribute posters, hoping to remind the public that Grimm is still missing. They've also worked with a media team to commission a billboard in Williams, Arizona, to keep her case in the spotlight. The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the case alongside the family and private investigators.
