In October 2015, Sasha Samsudean, a 27-year-old woman from Orlando, Florida, was murdered in her apartment after a night out with friends. The investigation that followed led to the shocking arrest and conviction of Stephen Duxbury, a security guard at her apartment complex, Uptown Apartments.

A Promising Life Ended

On Oct. 17, 2015, Sasha Samsudean — an outgoing professional apartment hunter — failed to respond to calls and texts from friends, leading them to request a welfare check at her third-floor apartment.

When police arrived, they found Sasha's body in her bed, partially covered by blankets. There were clear signs of a struggle, including injuries around her neck, and the smell of bleach suggested someone had attempted to clean the scene. An autopsy later confirmed that she had been strangled, with bruises on her upper body and foreign DNA on her neck and chest.

The Investigation Begins

Detectives quickly realized there was no sign of forced entry into the apartment, leading them to suspect that Sasha knew her killer. With surveillance cameras, digital key codes, and 24/7 security at Uptown Apartments, the investigation focused on how Sasha had returned home that night.

Security guard Stephen Duxbury, on duty that night, told police he had seen Sasha and two other women at the building's entrance. He claimed Sasha had no key fob or ID to access the building but managed to follow another resident inside. Duxbury said he last saw her attempting to enter her apartment.

However, CCTV footage and witness accounts began to contradict Duxbury's story. Two women who had accompanied Sasha home reported she was intoxicated but safely inside the building before they left. Another resident described seeing Sasha with Duxbury following her in the hallway.

Suspicion Grows

Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the night of the murder and noticed that Duxbury was seen leaving the building with two large garbage bags shortly after clocking out at 6 a.m. This was unusual behavior for him, and the bags matched those in Sasha's apartment. Additionally, Duxbury's phone had been factory reset, raising further suspicion.

Police obtained a search warrant and discovered Duxbury had conducted an online search on how to override a digital lock like the one on Sasha's door just hours before the murder. His fingerprints were found on the toilet seat in her apartment, and his DNA matched the evidence found on Sasha's body.

Arrest and Conviction

On Oct. 30, 2015, Duxbury was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, attempted sexual battery, and burglary. During the trial, which lasted about a week, the jury heard evidence of Duxbury's suspicious actions and the forensic proof linking him to the crime. After four hours of deliberation, he was found guilty on all counts and sentenced to two life terms plus 15 additional years. He remains in prison today.

Sasha Samsudean's tragic death and the subsequent conviction of the security guard who was supposed to protect her shocked the Orlando community. It served as a grim reminder that danger can sometimes come from the least expected places.
