68-Year-Old Killed While Mowing His Lawn

On a warm Wednesday afternoon in Cleveland, the kind of day made for outdoor chores and neighborly hellos, something terrible happened. Just after 1:30 p.m. on May 14, Thomas Overall was mowing his lawn — a routine task he had likely done dozens of times before. But on this day, the sound of the lawnmower was replaced with gunfire, and the quiet West Park neighborhood was turned into the scene of a tragedy.
A Shocking Crime in Broad Daylight
According to the Cleveland Division of Police, officers were dispatched to the 15700 block of Munn Road. There, they found 68-year-old Thomas Overall lying fatally wounded in the street. He had been shot while mowing his lawn, as confirmed by multiple eyewitnesses and news reports.
The suspected shooter, 66-year-old Bryan Hurt, was found deceased nearby on Hogsback Lane inside a vehicle near the Stinchcomb-Groth Memorial in the Rocky River Reservation. Police said the cause of death appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Cleveland 19 reported.
Authorities have stated that the incident is being treated as a suspected murder-suicide but emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing.
Who Was Thomas Overall?
Overall was a Missouri native who had lived in Cleveland for decades. His family told Fox 8 that he "loved his neighborhood and his neighbors" and was preparing to leave for a hiking trip in Spain with the Cleveland Hiking Club (CHC) just two days after the incident.
He had been a member of the hiking club since 2013 and had logged nearly 6,000 miles on foot with fellow members. "A wonderful person who did not need this," CHC President Sharon Uhl said in a statement reported by Cleveland 19.
In addition to his love for hiking, Overall worked part-time as a guest services ambassador for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Rock Entertainment Group released a statement, reported by WKYC, mourning the loss of a "compassionate and dedicated colleague," adding that his absence would be felt throughout the organization and community.
The Suspect: A Troubled Neighbor
Bryan Hurt, the alleged shooter, was also a local resident. Multiple neighbors described him as "volatile" and said he had long been a source of conflict in the community, according to PEOPLE. "He had continuous problems, everybody did in the neighborhood, with this neighbor," one resident told Cleveland 19 News.
Reports from Mayor Justin Bibb's administration also referred to Hurt as "a problematic neighbor for a number of years" during a town hall later that evening, according to WKYC.
Still, there is no public confirmation yet of a specific dispute between Hurt and Overall that could explain the tragic encounter.
A Life Cut Short
As the investigation continues, one fact remains heartbreakingly clear — Thomas Overall was a cherished figure whose sudden death has left a deep wound in his community. He wasn't famous. He didn't seek the spotlight. But to those who knew him, he was invaluable — a neighbor, a friend, a hiker, and a kind soul.
There's still an empty sidewalk on Munn Road where his lawnmower once stood still, a quiet marker of an ordinary afternoon turned tragic.
