Passenger Who Caused Flight to Be Diverted Must Pay Thousands
An Australian man has been hit with a hefty bill for fuel costs after causing a flight to divert due to his wild behavior. The 33-year-old from Western Australia was on a flight from Perth to Sydney on Sept. 25, 2023. His unruly actions were so disruptive the plane had to turn back to Perth. This diversion meant the crew had to dump fuel before landing, which also led to the cancellation of the flight.
Turbulent Flight
Police didn't specify how the passenger caused trouble on the flight, but they did say his behavior was so disruptive it forced the plane to turn around and head back to Perth. When the plane returned, the flight crew asked the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for help, and they arrested the man. The airline booked the rest of the passengers on later flights. The man now faces charges for disorderly conduct on an aircraft and for not following safety instructions.
Sky-High Fine
On Sept. 5, 2024, the man admitted his wrongdoing in court, pleading guilty to both charges. The Perth Magistrates Court didn't hold back. He was ordered to pay a steep fine of $9,000 Australian dollars, which is about $6,000 USD. On top of that, he had to pay more than $8,630 Australian dollars, or about $5,600 USD, to the airline to cover the fuel costs from the diverted flight.
"This incident should serve as a warning that criminal behavior on board can come at a heavy cost to the offender," said Shona Davis, AFP acting superintendent, as reported by WDTV. "It's far simpler to obey the directions of airline staff than cause unnecessary issues, which can end up hitting you in the hip pocket."
