Mitesh's ultimate motive was to claim a £2 million life insurance policy and start a family in Australia with his male lover, whom he met on the Grindr® dating app.
Mitesh's chilling plan extended beyond murder. Jessica had undergone fertility treatments, and the couple had frozen embryos stored for their future. Mitesh intended to use these embryos after her death to create a family with his boyfriend in Australia, completing his vision of a new life free from Jessica.
On May 14, 2018, Mitesh executed his plan by strangling Jessica with a plastic bag at their Middlesbrough, England, home. He staged the scene to appear as a botched burglary, ransacking their home himself to mislead investigators.
How the iPhone Exposed His Lies
However, Mitesh underestimated the digital trail he left behind. Investigators discovered that his iPhone's health app recorded steps he took while staging the crime scene. The data showed significant movement inside the house during the supposed burglary, contradicting his account that he had been out to pick up pizza at the time of the murder.
Further analysis of his online activity revealed damning evidence. Mitesh had been searching online for ways to kill Jessica, resulting in the use of insulin to subdue her before strangling her. His private messages also exposed his plans to move abroad with his boyfriend and use Jessica's embryos to start a family, solidifying his motive.
Mitesh Patel was ultimately convicted of Jessica's murder and sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison.

Missed Warning Signs of Abuse
